Still Holiday Shopping? What To Get That Photographer In Your Life

The most Christmas-y related photo I could find in my portfolio. I guess I know what I need to shoot next!

It’s 2021 (!) and here at ARTIST-AT-LARGE I’m feeling it’s crazy that The Holidays are already here! But maybe you are in the mood to get in the spirit and do some holiday shopping for the photographer in your life?

Here are a few items I bought for myself this year that I think any photographer would appreciate.

JOBY GorillaPod 5K Kit. Professional Tripod

I bought a Joby GorillaPod because I do a lot of travel photography where it’s just too much to take a big tripod. The Gorilla Pod can be strapped onto a pack or fits inside a backpack to carry it until needed. I’ve attached it to the camera even when I don’t need it, tucking the bottom ends under my arm and giving the camera a little extra stability. It can stand up straight, although it’s bendy and can wrap around fence posts or tree limbs – which allows the photographer to get into the shot.

Seagate Portable 2TB External Hard Drive

A photographer can never have too many back up drives, especially if they are professional, or use a larger megapixel camera. Almost all of my images now live on a couple of external hard drives – because a photographer always needs to have multiple drives – back ups of back ups of back ups all stored in different places!

Woven Vintage Camera Strap For All DSLR Cameras

These were all the rage when I went to art school and got my first camera back in !(&% !! Back then cameras came with skinny little straps that many photographers thought might break or snap or somehow lose their camera. Now cameras come with big wide straps that scream the name of the camera you are using to everyone around. Better to find a strap that just agrees with your photographer’s personality!

MagicFiber Microfiber Cleaning Cloths

A photographer can never have too many of these – to clean lenses, lcd screens, computer screens and phones. I tuck them into various places within my gear set up so they are handy

Thermal Thin Running Touchscreen Gloves

Nothing better but a pair of high tech gloves to keep your photographer’s hands warm while still being able use the touch screen on the their camera and devices without taking them off! I used my HEAD gloves (they also sell those at Amazon, but I got mine at Costco) during my recent three day trip in Yosemite when it dropped into the 30s. They worked great!

SanDisk Extreme PRO SD Cards

Want to give something small and light and oh so needed by every single photographer with a digital SLR camera? This is it. Like external drives, a photographer can never have too many of these!

This is the first of a few lists I have in mind for the holiday season! Look for them to show up over the next few days!

Happy Holidays!

  1. Good recommendations. I realised recently that my CF cards are pitifully small, in contemporary terms, and a fraction of the size of the SD cards that I have purchased and popped into other cameras and audio gear. “Much cheaper now, just do it”, I told myself – and eek. Somehow, the price of CF cards is on a different path to SD cards – at least, it is on my timeline!
