Even as an abstract and conceptual artist, I find inspiration in landscape. Lines, color, spatial relationships, geometry, contrasts … Many people might find it confusing as to why someone like me would take so many images of seemingly non-artful things. To study. That is why.
Mt.Tamalpais is a landmark that I have been able to see from almost everywhere I’ve lived in The Bay Area, although I have not spent so much time driving its roads or hiking its trails. Muir Woods sits at the foot of Mt. Tam. So does Green Gulch Farm, Muir Beach, Stinson Beach, and Bolinas – all places that are on my list of where to take people when they come to visit from far away.
Mt. Tam and the coast below it is beautiful in any season, in any weather. These images were taken in May 2021 on a mid-week drive around the mountain. The grasses have already turned golden. Most of the mountain is contained in protected public lands – which is a beautiful thing.
